The short answer

On August 2, 2027 there is a total solar eclipse, the longest of the 21st century visible from easily accessible land: up to 6 minutes and 23 seconds of darkness near Luxor, Egypt. It is total in southern Spain, North Africa and Arabia, and partial across most of Europe, including the UK. It is not visible from most of the Americas. In astrology it is a new moon at 10° Leo.

Introduction

Some eclipses stay with you for a lifetime, and this is one of them. On August 2, 2027, the Moon will cover the Sun completely for more than six minutes at its peak. For a longer one visible from land, we will have to wait until 2114.

Here is what matters: where to see it, what time, how to watch it safely and what it means in astrology.

Where to see it

The path of totality, where day turns into night for a few minutes, crosses:

The longest totality is in Egypt, near Luxor and its temples: 6 minutes and 23 seconds. A partial eclipse is visible across almost all of Europe, including the UK and Ireland, much of Africa and the Middle East.

Ceuta and Melilla have the longest totality in Spain. If you plan to travel for it, book early: southern Spain and Egypt are already getting ready for thousands of visitors.

Can you see it from the US?

Almost not. When it happens, it is still night in most of the Americas. Greatest eclipse is around 6:07 a.m. New York time (10:07 UTC), and only the far northeast, Maine and Atlantic Canada, catches a small partial eclipse right at sunrise.

That doesn't take away its weight: in astrology, an eclipse is felt all over the planet, whether you see it or not. Below you will find simple ways to mark it from home.

How to watch it safely

What it means in astrology

The eclipse falls on a new moon at 10° Leo, the sign ruled by the Sun itself. It is like a symbolic blackout of the ego so that something more authentic can light up: creativity, love, joy and the way you shine.

It opens an eclipse season that closes on August 17 with a lunar eclipse in Aquarius, on the Leo and Aquarius axis: the self and the we, your own heart and the community. A week after the eclipse, on August 9, Saturn turns retrograde, so what moves now will be reviewed slowly in the months that follow.

Leo, Aquarius, Taurus and Scorpio will feel it most, especially if you were born around August 2 or have planets or your rising sign near 10° of the fixed signs.

How to mark the eclipse

During eclipses it helps to observe more and decide less. A few simple ideas:

  1. Go to bed early the night before and wake up in silence.
  2. Write by hand which part of you is ready to be reborn and what you want to create for the rest of the year.
  3. Turn off your phone for a while and give yourself a quiet space.
  4. Don't force big decisions that day. Let the answers come over the following weeks.
