Rising sign calculator

Misha KokuInstant
The short answer

To find your rising sign you need your birth date, your exact birth time and your birth city. Enter them below and the calculator shows your rising sign, your Sun sign and your Moon sign instantly.

Calculate your rising sign

Your data is not stored: the calculation runs in your own browser. City search uses Open-Meteo.

What is the rising sign?

The rising sign, or Ascendant, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment you were born. If the Sun speaks of your essence, the rising sign speaks of how you show up: your first impression, the way you start things and how you live the transits day to day.

That is why many people feel the horoscope for their rising sign fits them better than the one for their Sun. Ideally, read both.

Why do I need the exact time?

The Earth turns and the horizon changes sign roughly every two hours. A difference of 15 or 20 minutes can change your rising sign if you were born near the border between two signs. If the calculator warns you that you are near the border, it is worth confirming your time.

If you don't know your time

Ask your family or check your birth certificate: the time is often there. In the meantime, check "I don't know my time" and the calculator shows your Sun and Moon, which barely depend on the time.

How it is calculated

The calculator uses Jean Meeus's astronomical formulas, the same ones astrology software uses, and it accounts for your city's time zone and daylight saving time on the date you were born. We checked it against professional ephemerides and the difference is under one degree.

Questions people ask

What is my rising sign?

Your rising sign depends on your birth date, your exact birth time and your birth city. Enter them in the calculator on this page and you will see it instantly, along with your Sun sign and Moon sign.

Which matters more, the Sun or the rising sign?

Both. The Sun speaks of your essence and the rising sign of how you show up and live the transits. That is why it helps to read the horoscope for both.

Can I know my rising sign without my birth time?

Not with certainty, because the rising sign changes roughly every two hours. Without the time you can still know your Sun and, almost always, your Moon.

Is it free?

Yes. The calculator is free and your data is not stored: the calculation runs in your browser.
